Recreations & Leisure
Fort Worth has sometimes been called “the city where the west began.” You’ll find that cowboys and cowboy history play an important role in both the city’s history and the current attractions available. But don’t worry – you’re not going to be called on to rope a steer or ride a bronc, unless (of course) you want to give it a try.
Annual events include rodeos, the parade of lights in the Sundance District and more music than you can imagine. Visit area ranches or spend an evening in a real cowboy saloon like the White Elephant or Billy Bob’s.
It’s not all about cowboys and you’ll find plenty of other things to do in Fort Worth. From mega-shopping trips to nature hikes and botanical gardens, you’re sure to find something that you just have to do while you’re in Fort Worth.
City Getaways
If you can’t find it in Fort Worth, you’re sure to find it in Dallas or Arlington. Shopping is naturally one of the big tourist draws of the metropolitan area, but there are lots of other things to do as well. The Dallas Zoo is one of the largest zoos in this part of the US and you can easily spend a full day looking at the exhibits. Botanical gardens and perpetual carnivals, restaurants, theatre and more are among the things to do in Dallas and Arlington.
If flea markets are just what you’re looking for, you can find one of the largest flea markets imaginable just north of Fort Worth in Denton. Open year round, there’s camping and other attractions available.
Traveling south to Granbury, you’ll find a charming town filled with historic sights. From the drive-in theater to the Granbury Opera House, you can find entertainment year around. Or take time to visit the Hood County Museum or try a paddle wheel boat ride.
From Forth Worth, you can also spend a weekend to the east in Shreveport, Louisiana. Gaming or shopping are popular pastimes, as are the many events ranging from concerts to comedy tours.
Wichita Falls is another popular tourists destination that’s only a short drive from Fort Worth. From putt-putt golf to fire and police museums, you’ll find plenty to do in Wichita Falls.
